Snorekeling, continued from page 1
. . . ing in every direction as we snorkeled among them. Large and colorful fish treated our eyes between the lulls in the sea lion show. For comfort and extra safety our guide pulled a safety line tied to an inflatable device with handles. When the current got too strong or if someone got tired it was always within reach. The highlight of the snorkel trip was the journey through the archway. Its mystery exposed, we ventured along the other side of the rock and floated above a group of divers who were teasing the large lobsters and eels at the base of a 40 foot wall. Our guide, a free diver, swam down to them and grabbed a starfish from the bottom and set it on the inflatable for all of us to see. After swimming around the point of the rock and getting up close and personal with several pups sunning themselves on the rocks and swimming through a huge school of small pargo and jacks we made our way back to the boat, tired but feeling great for mastering our fears for that day at least.
The trip wound up around noon at that deserted beach where lunch was served (included in the total trip price of $40) under a palapa. After lunch we swam in the private cove and chased large cortez angelfish and seargent majors among many, many other colorful tropical reef fish. When we returned that night to the hotel La Concha we relaxed around the pool recalling the events of the day and congratulating ourselves for not chickening out. It was safe and fun. I can't imagine, now, going to La Paz without visiting the sea lion rookery. It is truly a must see La Paz hallmark!
